Excellence in Health Care

Kaiser Permanente's mission is to deliver high quality medical care and health-related services to all Health Plan members. We have made a firm commitment to quality assessment and quality improvement.

In December 1995, Kaiser Permanente-Hawaii was the first healthcare provider in the state to earn a full three-year accreditation from the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) www.ncqa.org. An independent, non-profit organization located in Washington, D.C., NCQA leads the nation in improving quality of care in the managed care industry. Its accreditation process measures how well a health plan manages all parts of its delivery system.

To date, Kaiser Permanente-Hawaii continues to receive full three-year accreditations -- with "Excellent" ratings for Commercial, Medicare, and Medicaid groups.

Philosophy of Group Practice

A key factor in the Hawaii Permanente Medical Group's (HPMG) continuing success is its design as a group practice. Those who join us must be highly committed to the mutual benefit of all Medical Group members. The Medical Group is controlled and managed by elected physician administrators who carefully consider the effects of their decisions on the group as a whole.

The following are HPMG's guidelines for assuring high standards of medical care. Physicians meeting these guidelines are given a contract renewal and the possibility of a pay increase.

Physicians are evaluated annually by their colleagues. Evaluation criteria
   are found in HPMG's Values Statement.

Physicians are also evaluated on an ongoing basis by their patients via
   the Kaiser Permanente Patient Satisfaction Survey.

Board certification is a requirement for associate status and is required within four
   years of joining HPMG. Currently 96% of our physicians are board certified in their specialties.
