Family Leave of Absence
All physicians (including Pool Physicians) are eligible for Family
Leave of Absence.
A total of twelve weeks of Family Leave may be taken during a twelve-month
period. Physicians who normally work a reduced schedule (less than
ten units per week) and Pool Physicians will be eligible for twelve
weeks of Family Leave based on the number of units normally worked
per week. Family Leave may be taken for any one or more of the following
reasons:
- Birth of a child of the physician and in order to care for such
child commencing within the first year
- Placement of a child with the physician for adoption or foster
care (leave must begin within the first year following placement)
- To care for the physician's seriously ill spouse, parent, or
dependent child
- The physician's own serious illness
- Care for dependent child following spouse's death
Maternity Leave
Women physicians may use accrued sick leave and leave of absence
without pay for maternity purposes. Sick leave may be used for the
period of time during which the mother's physician certifies that
she is unable to perform her normal work duties due to disability
associated with pregnancy and its sequel. All other time absent
from work shall be treated as leave of absence without pay and shall
be granted on the same terms and conditions as other leaves of absence
without pay except that the physician on maternity leave may return
to the same classification, position and Medical Center location
at the expiration of the leave, if that position still exists. If
not, the physician will be granted preference in obtaining a similar
position at her Medical Center or other Medical Centers.
Death in the Family
Leave
Up to three days of leave without loss of pay may be granted to
Senior, Participant, Associate and Contract Physicians at the time
of death of a parent, sibling, parent-in-law, spouse, domestic partner
or child; or the parent or child of the domestic partner.
Jury Duty Leave
Physicians will receive their regular income based on their usual
workweek during jury selection and jury duty time. Income received
by the physician may not exceed ten units per workweek for time
served in jury selection and duty time. The physician may be compensated
for time in excess of the ten units during that week only for rendering
patient care. No loss of benefits will occur for the time spent
on jury duty. The time period allotted for jury duty will be that
time from which physician is directed to appear at court to the
conclusion of jury duty or upon excuse from jury duty, whichever
occurs first.
Military Leave
Leaves of absence without pay will be granted to all Physicians
(including Pool Physicians) who serve in the uniformed services
of the United States. Uniformed services includes the Armed Forces,
including their reserve units, Army National Guard and Air National
Guard, when engaged in active duty for training, initial duty training,
inactive duty training or full-time National Guard Duty, the commissioned
corps of the Public Health Services, and any other category of persons
designated by the President in time of war or emergency.
Service in the uniformed services means performance of duty on
a voluntary or involuntary basis.
